Sheep Soup chosen to develop new musical in Canada
Following the success of Sheep Soup’s UK tour of The Leftovers, they will join forces with producer Michael Rubinoff (Olivier award-winning Come From Away) at Sheridan College this Autumn to take part in the Canadian Musical Theatre Project, a 5 week development programme for new musicals.
Sheep Soup makes collaborative genre-busting contemporary musical theatre, staging sold-out runs of their previous shows at Nottingham Playhouse, Curve Leicester, The Lowry Manchester and Edinburgh Fringe. Their unique naturalistic musical style, born from training with the BAFTA award-winning Television Workshop in Nottingham has led to support from Arts Council England and Curve Leicester as Associate Artists.
“In order for British Musical Theatre to develop and excel as an art form, we need artists like Sheep Soup. Each show pushes the boundaries of what a musical is and can be”
Mercury Musical Developments
Following a pitch at musical theatre showcase event BEAM 2018 Sheep Soup was approached by the Canadian Musical Theatre project to create a new show around the concept of Hoarding. It will explore how people connect to objects, how hoarding affects family relationships, and the power of music in the context of mental health.
The show’s music and lyrics will be written by Nic Harvey and Rob Green, a collaboration which has brought to life Sheep Soup’s previous productions. The book will be written by Esther Coles (BBC Radio 4’s Nurse), whose Nottingham voice and ability to create relatable comic characters will bring real heart to the piece. The show’s director Adam Lenson brings a wealth of musical theatre experience, following acclaimed recent productions The Rink, Wasted and Sheep Soup’s tour of The Leftovers. Áine Flanagan Productions (How to Win Against History, Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho) will work alongside Sheep Soup’s creative Producer Ben Welch to guide the show through development.
“Sheep Soup’s imaginative spirit, sense of adventure and totally original approach to musical theatre is unrivalled”
Nikolai Foster - Artistic Director, The Curve Theatre Leicester
